Minister of Parliament visits Nata

Minister of Parliament Mfa Oliphant addressed the residents of Nata today at
the Nata kgotla. He gave the residents an opportunity to discuss their
concerns and then gave response. Many residents were concerned about a new
program that has started to house orphans that are attending school in Nata
from the surrounding villages. We heard that the building has no
electricity and is in a poor state. We also heard complaints about the
roads from Nata to the surrounding villages. During the rainy season, some
of these roads are almost impassable. These types of meetings are very
common across Botswana and they are almost always set up in the same way. The
guest speaker sits at the front surrounded by the village chiefs, headman,
and government department heads. The residents sit on benches or on the
ground and often seek shade under the trees. These meetings are very
important as they give the average resident an opportunity to address their
leadership.
