We are very excited in Nata as our village has been chosen to be the setting for an upcoming children's book. Several months back we were contacted by Kristin Sargianis from the Museum of Science in Boston, Massachusetts. Kristin is a curriculum developer and is part of an amazing project called Engineering is Elementary. The books are targeted to children in grades 1 thru 5 and they encourage kids to think about math and science. The books will be distributed in the United States as well as Australia, Malaysia, Thailand, Greece, and Italy. All the books are set in a different country and follow a lead character who solves a problem through engineering. The storybook for Nata features a young girl who graduates from the University of Botswana and comes back to her home village, Nata, and teaches the locals how to build a solar oven. She demonstrates that the solar oven reduces the need for chopping wood and burning it for cooking She also explains how the local rondavels are marvels of engineering as they stay cool in the day and warm at night. If you want to know more about these books, please check out their website www.mos.org/ele. Kristin has promised to send us copies of the book so these kids at Nata Primary School will get to see their village featured and also learn a thing or two themselves. They have also promised to acknowledge the Nata Blog and the Nata AIDS and Orphans Trust. Thanks Kristin for choosing Nata. We appreciate your commitment to making the story authentic!
